Israel said that deputies will now carry rifles on school grounds in Broward County.
The sheriff said the school resource deputy had the right tools and tactics to engage the shooter and was prepared to do something about the shooter if he had contact with him.

A week after the
massacre at a Florida high school that left 17 people dead, the sheriff
in charge of investigating the shooting has ordered deputies to carry
rifles on school grounds "from this point forward".
For now, the deputies will have to keep the rifles in their locked
patrol cars when they're not physically carrying them. So it will be
done safely. Only deputies who have trained and qualified will carry
those rifles. "We need to be able to defeat any threat on campus".
Several police departments have asked the school district to allow that
for years, said Margate Chief Dana Watson, vice president of the chiefs'
group.
Last week, former student Nikolas Cruz _ armed with an AR-15 and extra
ammunition _ walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High and mowed down
dozens of people, killing 17 and wounding 15 others. Israel said
investigators are still working to determine what role the officer
played during the attack.
The shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School has reignited national
conversation about gun control and mental health reform, as well as the
legislative inaction of officials who have the power to change those
laws. "He was armed. As our command staff moves forward in this
investigation the response and actions of Deputy Peterson will be looked
at and scrutinized as will everyone". "I think it is a bad idea",
Nelson said, calling for an assault weapons ban instead. "We need to
look at how many school resource deputies are being employed at each
school".
Also on Wednesday, President Trump invited Americans touched by gun
violence to the White House on Wednesday for a "listening session".
