'They Want Common Sense Gun Laws': Broward Sheriff On Stoneman Douglas Students

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who's ordered all deputies to qualify to carry rifles at schools, laid out a three-prong plan to make schools and America safer at CNN's special town hall Wednesday night.
When not carrying the rifles, deputies will store the guns in locked law enforcement vehicles, Israel added.
Several police departments have asked the school district to allow that for years, said Margate Chief Dana Watson, vice president of the chiefs' group. "But we need to be able to defeat any threat that comes onto campus", Israel said.
Anthony Borges is the heroic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student who was shot in both legs and once in the back while trying to close and lock a classroom door. "If one of my officers was remiss, I'll handle it accordingly", said Israel.
Some deputies will carry AR-15 rifles, the same weapon used by the 19-year-old accused of carrying out the attack. The sheriff said those details are still being investigated.
According to the Herald, the sheriff's office is reviewing whether deputies' response was adequate - including whether an armed officer assigned to the sprawling campus did enough. He suggested schools could be built in ways that reduce the potential for crime, and that every campus in the United States should have a resource officer. "Deputy Peterson, as you all know, is the school resource deputy".
