PARKLAND, Fla. (CBS12) —
School
Resource officer, Deputy Scot Peterson, sought cover from accused
shooter Nikolas Cruz during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
shooting, according to the New York Times.
In
an interview with the Times, Coral Springs Officer Burton said Deputy
Peterson “was seeking cover behind a concrete column leading to a
stairwell.” Burton told the Times he worried the gunman could be
lurking in the lot because he heard no gunshots or screams to guide him
toward the site of the shooting, says NYT.
Sheriff Scott Israel said
Peterson was armed and in uniform near the building but "he never went
in." Israel suspended Peterson without pay pending an internal
investigation. Peterson, according to Israel, resigned.
